HUNTINGTON, Emery County — A prescribed fire that got out of control “grew significantly” over the weekend and destroyed two buildings, authorities said Monday.
The Trail Mountain Fire has burned 2,637 acres and is at 10 percent containment, Emery County Sheriff’s Officials said on Facebook. The fire started last week and is burning in Manti-La Sal National Forest lands west of Huntington.
Winds pushed the fire out of Mill Canyon and into Meetinghouse Canyon, near state Route 31, officials said. Authorities urged drivers going through Huntington Canyon on Route 31 to use caution since smoke from the fire tends to settle near the road.
The fire destroyed a cabin and an outbuilding, officials said. The blaze also is threatening North Emery Water Users culinary water, officials said.
Heavy air support was being used on the fire area Monday, including a Black Hawk and two Chinook helicopters, sheriff’s office officials said.
A total of five helicopters, 11 fire engines and 259 people are working to contain the blaze.
Forest Roads 0034, 2302, 2181, 2180, and 2182; Forest Trail 0051; and the Trail Mountain CCC Trail were all temporarily closed, officials wrote last week in a statement posted to Facebook. They said the closures would remain in place until the fire is controlled.
The controlled fire was supposed to cover about 4,000 acres and began Monday, June 4, said Manti National Forest spokeswoman Rosann Fillmore.
