AMERICAN FORK — A driver died from injuries suffered in a fiery crash on I-15 early Sunday morning, authorities say.

Emergency crews received a report of a single-vehicle crash on northbound I-15, near the ramp to Pioneer Crossing, shortly before 1 a.m.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers say a male, whose name and age were not immediately released, was driving a white Dodge Ram 1500 in second-left land of the freeway when the vehicle "drifted right" and collided with an impact attenuator dividing the freeway and an offramp. The collision caused the vehicle to erupt in flames.

The pickup truck was "fully engulfed" by the time emergency crews arrived, troopers added. Firefighters and paramedics extricated the driver after putting out the fire. He was flown by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital in "serious life-threatening condition," but staff informed troopers the driver's injuries were "not survivable," UHP said.

Troopers said they aren't sure why the driver drifted and the crash remains under investigation.

The crash closed northbound I-15 for about two hours while traffic was diverted onto 500 East. The closure has since been lifted and all lanes are reopened.
