MOAB — A Plain City man died after he fell about 45 feet while hiking near Determination Towers Thursday night, authorities said.

Malan Checketts, 34, was riding all-terrain vehicles in the area Thursday but fell after he hiked to an area about one mile south of Determination Towers, a popular ATV trail located northwest of Moab, according to Grand County sheriff's officials.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a fall shortly after 5 p.m., authorities said. Grand County Search and Rescue, Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Grand County EMS and Classic Lifeguard Helicopter responded to the fall, but Checketts died from injuries suffered in the fall.
