SALT LAKE CITY — Newly-released video and audio provide the most detailed account yet of what happened on a Utah Transit Authority bus last week, prior to the bus having its windows shot out by pellets.
The bus surveillance video shows five teens boarding the bus April 17 about 9 p.m., near 1950 W. North Temple.
The bus driver, whose name has yet to be made public, allowed the teens to ride even though they said they didn’t have enough money to pay their fares.
“I’ll do it once, guys, but that’s it,” the driver said on the video.
Moments later, a passenger could be heard warning the driver that the teens were making threats about him.
“Get off!” the driver exclaimed. “I give you guys a free ride, and you say something like that to me? Get out before I call the cops!”
Shortly after the teens exited the bus, pellets broke two of the bus windows.
“Hey, my bus was just shot up!” the driver radioed into a dispatcher.
UTA spokesperson Carl Arky said police were able to apprehend five teens in the coming days.

The shooting had apparently been part of a larger spree, investigators said.
Arky said one teen was arrested and booked into juvenile detention, and the other teens are potentially facing charges, pending a prosecutor’s decision.
The driver, Arky said, was not harmed during the shooting.
He declined a request for comment through his department Monday.
