RIVERTON — Police identified a South Jordan man who died from injuries suffered after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a pickup truck Sunday evening.

Ryan Smith, 38, died from injuries suffered in the crash, Unified police officials said.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash between a motorcycle and a pickup truck near 11800 S. 3840 West before 7:45 p.m., Unified police detective Chuck Malm said Sunday.

Malm said Smith was traveling east on 11800 South when a westbound pickup truck made a left-hand turn onto 3840 West in front of the motorcycle, causing Smith to collide with the passenger’s side of the truck and pinning both Smith and the motorcycle underneath the truck.

Crews were able to extract Smith after about 15 minutes. A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene, but crews pronounced Smith dead before it left the scene.

A YouCaring page* was set up to help Smith’s family cover funeral costs. The page noted that Smith had a wife and daughter.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, though Malm said on Sunday that sun glare may have factored in the crash.

Malm encouraged all drivers to be “extra vigilant” with more bicycles and motorcycles are expected on the roadways because of warmer temperatures.
