SALT LAKE CITY — Washington County Republicans elected Travis Seegmiller on Monday to replace a Utah House member who abruptly resigned last week.

Seegmiller, an attorney and Dixie State University law, economics and management professor, beat out seven other candidates for the seat. The Washington County GOP sent his name to the governor's office, and Seegmiller could be seated as early as Wednesday. He would represent House District 62.

Former Republican Rep. Jon Stanard resigned last Tuesday ahead of a Daily Mail story alleging he paid a prostitute for sex in a Salt Lake hotel room on two occasions last year.

Seegmiller, of St. George, has worked on or advised numerous political campaigns at the local, state and national levels. He was a strategy staffer for Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign in Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Michigan and Florida, according to his Dixie State bio. He is a graduate of Yale University and Georgetown Law School.

He would fill the remainder of Stanard's term, which expires at the end of the year.
