MILLCREEK — Police were investigating the case of a man who was shot in the leg in an alley near a smoke shop in Millcreek Thursday night.

People in the Pharoah's Smoke Shop, 3925 S. State, heard gunshots about 8 p.m. and walked outside to find the 18-year-old victim limping, said Unified Police Lt. Paul Barker.

Detectives had no information about those who fired the shots, Barker said. The victim's name was not released.

Witnesses said the injured man briefly spoke to a Utah Transit Authority bus driver who had pulled over, then got in a car before it made a U-turn and drove south on State Street to Intermountain Medical Center, Barker said.

The extent of the man's injuries was not immediately clear.

"We don’t know where it hit him in the leg," Barker said of the gunfire. He "was able to get from that back alley where we recovered the casings to State Street."

Police found three shell casings in the alley.

Officers at the hospital late Thursday were interviewing the people who were in the car with the victim. Barker did not specify how many people were believed to be in the car.
