WEST VALLEY CITY — A man went to a park early Saturday morning to sell a cellphone, but instead encountered a machete-wielding man who stole his car, according to police.

The man, who is in his early 20s, went to Hunter Park in West Valley City at about 1:30 a.m., West Valley City police Lt. Jeff Conger said.

He was going there to sell the phone to a woman he knew from Facebook.

When the man got to the park, he met the woman and while they were looking at phones two unknown men pulled up. One of the men had a machete and told the seller of the cellphone he was going to rob him. The group, including the woman, took the man’s car and then left the park, Conger said.

Police found one of the men and the woman about an hour later. Kilpatrick Ward, 20, and Paige Patten, 21, were arrested and later admitted to being involved in the carjacking, Conger said.

They were booked into jail Saturday for investigation of aggravated robbery.

Police did not find the other man, who allegedly had the machete, until later Saturday, Conger said.

The other man was involved in a purse-snatching incident at Valley Fair Mall on Saturday. Officers caught him and realized he was wanted in connection with the earlier carjacking, Conger said.

Jose Ivan Beltran Perez, 23, was arrested and booked into jail for investigation of aggravated robbery.

The victim of the carjacking did not have any injuries, Conger said.

The machete has not been recovered, he said. Police obtained the car that was stolen and the car in which the three suspects arrived at the park to search for evidence, and the weapon might be in one of the cars, Conger said.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article stated the victim intended to meet the woman and the two men at the park to sell a cellphone, according to information from officials. This story has been corrected to show the victim only intended to meet the woman he knew from Facebook.
