SALT LAKE CITY — A former BYU football player was killed in a head-on car crash in California Sunday.

Ryan Folsom, 29, from San Antonio, Texas, was driving on I-5 near Redding, California, when 28-year-old Grace Elizabeth Ward went through the median and crashed into Folsom’s Honda Accord, sending the vehicle into the ditch on the shoulder of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Folsom, who was a former walk-on running back with the Cougars from 2010-11, was transferred to a nearby hospital but later died as a result of his injuries, according to KRCR. Police said Ward, who is recovering from a broken leg, may have been suicidal at the time of the crash.

A GoFundMe page set up in Folsom’s behalf said he was traveling to an interview for a residency position as a doctor. It was just one interview of many Folsom had previously arranged, the page said.

He leaves behind two young boys and a wife, Lauren, that is expecting their third child this month.

“He loved the Avengers and anything superhero related, perhaps because he loved the idea of filling that role in any capacity,” the GoFundMe page says. “He loved being the superhero for his two boys, he loved the idea of being a doctor and saving lives.”

Folsom had 10 carries for 97 yards while with the Cougars. BYU play-by-play broadcaster Greg Wrubell shared Folsom’s best highlight on Twitter — a 74-yard run against Colorado State.

> One day, I shared w/ Lauren Folsom an audio file I thought she and Ryan might appreciate: it was the play-by-play call of Ryan's highest-profile moment as a BYU back--a 74-yard run in Fort Collins (still the 8th-longest run from scrimmage in BYU history): > > — Greg Wrubell (@gregwrubell) [January 9, 2018](https://twitter.com/gregwrubell/status/950518006286761984?ref_src=twsrc^tfw)
