GRAND CANYON-PARASHANT NATIONAL MONUMENT — Local search teams found a missing teen Wednesday after the boy disappeared while hunting for deer antlers in Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument.
The Mohave County Arizona Sheriff's Office received a report of the missing teen Tuesday when the boy did not return from a shed hunting trip 60 miles south of St. George, according to Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument spokesman Jeff Axel.
Search teams from Washington County, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service and the Department of Public Safety joined the sheriff's office in looking for the boy, who was not equipped to stay overnight in below-freezing temperatures.
Two National Park Service rangers spotted the teen walking down a rough dirt road 24 hours after he had gone missing. The boy said he had become lost in the confusing terrain and had started a fire to keep himself warm overnight using matches he had brought with him, but did not have any food.
"The teen’s survival over several days would be unlikely due to the cold and because of the lack of travelers in the area who could have helped him," Axel said in an emailed statement.
The National Park Service reminds visitors that cellphones do not work in all locations within the monument. The organization recommends bringing a satellite phone or messenger, extra supplies and a 2016 BLM Arizona Strip map for navigation.
Authorities have not yet specified where the teen is from.
