SALT LAKE CITY — President Donald Trump made his first trip to Utah since taking office, visiting Welfare Square before traveling to the Capitol to sign two documents altering Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments Monday.
His visit also included meeting with leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after he arrived into Salt Lake shortly before 10:50 a.m. His trip last about 2 1/2 hours before he flew back to Washington.
In signing two proclamations, Trump broke the monuments into five smaller monuments, shrinking the amount of land owned by the federal government by more than 2 million acres.
The decision was applauded by some and protested by others, including five Native American nations announcing their plan to file a lawsuit. Some protesters marching down State Street also caused a road closure for about 20 minutes after Trump signed the proclamations.
