NEWCASTLE — Utah Highway Patrol officials have identified five victims in a fatal Iron County crash in which a car burst into flames.

At about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Fernando Ruiz, 19, was driving a Chevrolet Suburban eastbound on state Route 56 near mile post 33, about a mile northeast of Newcastle in Iron County, UHP officials reported via the agency’s website. Ruiz was the only person in the Suburban.

Ruiz, a Cedar City resident, crossed into the westbound lane for an unknown reason, hitting a Ford Escape head-on. In the Escape were driver Jesus Jimenez-Lopez, 58, along with Lydia Jimenez, 57, Jose Jimenez, 60, and Juan Antonio Jimenez Sanchez, 19.

The Escape went off the road to the right and rolled onto its roof, according to UHP. The Suburban continued moving straight on the road, and burst into flames when it stopped.

All five people involved in the crash died on the scene, UHP officials said.
