SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a person of interest in a South Salt Lake shooting after a police chase that ended in Sugar House late Wednesday night.
Morgan Dwayne Winger, 32, was driving a stolen vehicle with another passenger when the Unified Police District Metro Gang Unit spotted the vehicle around 11 p.m., South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said. The officers stopped traffic, but the driver in the stolen vehicle drove off with police in pursuit.
The chase lasted approximately 5 minutes and ended in front of a house near 1800 S. Wilmington in Sugar House after police spiked the tires, Unified Police Lt. Bill Robertson said. The passenger of the car tried running away on foot, but police quickly stopped him. Both Winger and his passenger were arrested.
Both men are connected with white supremacist gangs, according to Robertson.
The Unified police turned Winger over to the South Salt Lake police because they had named him as a person of interest in a shooting on July 23 where a woman was shot in the torso and leg at an apartment complex at 390 E. 2700 South, Keller said.
“We didn’t have any suspect information at the time of the shooting. People weren’t being very cooperative and they continued to not give us enough information. So we developed a person of interest for that shooting, and that was the person that was in the car that fled,” Keller said.
South Salt Lake detectives interviewed Winger and booked him into the Salt Lake County Jail Thursday on charges unrelated to the shooting. They also recovered a handgun in the stolen vehicle Winger was driving.
Winger was booked on suspicion of failing to stop or respond at command of police, possession of a dangerous weapon and possession or use of a controlled substance.
Winger has a long history of criminal activity in Utah, extending back to 2003.
