SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. attorney for Utah submitted his resignation last week after the Trump administration abruptly called on the top federal prosecutors in 46 jurisdictions to step down.

"Late Friday evening, United States Attorney John W. Huber received formal notification of the administration's request for his letter of resignation. He immediately complied with that request and has offered his resignation," U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch said in a statement Monday.

Huber remained in the office Monday while the Department of Justice and the Trump administration decides whether to accept his resignation.

All 93 U.S. attorneys nationwide are political appointees. Some states, divided into separate districts, have more than one. A total of 47 U.S. attorneys had already resigned.

President Barack Obama appointed Huber to the job in February 2015, with the backing of Republican Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch. The Senate confirmed Huber in June and he took the oath office in August 2015.

The U.S. attorney oversees all federal criminal and civil cases in the state with a staff of 85 in Salt Lake City and a branch office in St. George.

Huber started working with the U.S. Attorney's Office in April 2002 as a special assistant U.S. attorney prosecuting firearms crimes as a part of the office's Project Safe Neighborhoods.
