BOUNTIFUL – Despite strong opposition from many residents, Bountiful City Council members voted on Tuesday night to approve plans for a new City Hall and City Plaza at 200 South between Main Street and 100 East.

In September, City manager Gary Hill said the new building would cost the city $13 million, paid for through the city's Capital Reserve Program.

"We are really just trying to invest in the heart of the city," Hill said.

He believes the project is a long time coming, especially after the city considered making $6.5 million in renovations to the old city hall.

"We know that repairs need to be done with this building. The question is, by relocating and building a new building could we add more value to the community?" Hill said.

In a September meeting, Bountiful resident John Harmer voiced his opinion. He questioned the council's research on the impact this project would have on the community.

"As I can tell, you had not made the necessary preparation to justify a decision to go forward with a new city hall," Harmer said.

The site of new city hall and city plaza would replace Stoker School and a soccer field on 200 South. It would also close 200 South between Main Street and 100 East.

Council members said construction should start in the spring of 2017.
