SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake police sergeant was upgraded from serious condition after being hit by a car Monday night, authorities said.

Around 7:30 p.m., the male sergeant was northbound on his motorcycle, attempting to pull over a driver on 1100 South at Main Street when a westbound Toyota Corolla struck him, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Martin Kaufmann.

The sergeant was initially in serious condition when he was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening, Kaufmann said. He was later upgraded to good condition.

Witness Steve Grizzell said he turned around and saw the sergeant on the ground after hearing the crash.

"There was just this loud — almost like an explosion, just a big sound," he said.

Grizzell added that he heard the sergeant tell another officer that his leg was "probably broken."

The driver of the Corolla was not injured. The driver of the vehicle that the sergeant was trying to pull over left the scene, though it wasn't clear whether that person knew they were being pulled over, according to Kaufmann.

A citation against the driver of the Corolla is possible, Kaufmann said, but no conclusions were reached Monday night. The investigation was turned over to the Utah Highway Patrol.
