DRAPER — After threatening to "go on a rampage" at Lone Peak Hospital earlier this month, a man showed up there with two knives, according to a criminal case filed Wednesday.

George Allen Handley, 48, was charged in 3rd District Court with making a threat of terrorism, a third-degree felony; illegal weapon possession, a class A misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.

Handley called the Draper hospital on Aug. 12, saying he "was angry about the care he received," charges state.

"He wanted to know specifically who was working in the ER because he was coming to the hospital and threatened to 'go on a rampage,'" according to charging documents.

Lone Peak Hospital was placed on lockdown, and Draper police arrived at the emergency room. Officers were there when Hadley arrived with a 12-inch kitchen knife and a fixed blade utility knife inside a bag he had with him, charges state.

Officers also allegedly found Handley in possession of a methamphetamine pipe.

Hospital staff told police it wasn't Hadley's first time terrorizing Lone Peak Hospital. One nurse told investigators Handley threatened in July to come to the hospital with a gun. On Aug. 11, he went to the hospital "and was acting strangely and was very agitated," court documents say. The hospital was placed on lockdown on that day as well.

"(Handley) poses a serious public safety risk," charges state.

Handley, whose last known address was in Sandy, is currently out of custody, according to jail records. A warrant for his arrest was issued Wednesday.

Criminal history

Handley pleaded guilty Tuesday in Murray Justice Court to giving a false identity to a police officer, a class B misdemeanor. A theft of services charge in the same case was dismissed Tuesday. Handley was sentenced to 20 days in jail and six months on probation, but the jail portion of the sentence was suspended. A $200 fine against Handley was also suspended.

Court records indicate Handley's criminal history in Utah is extensive and includes four convictions for DUI and six convictions for intoxication. He has also previously pleaded guilty to retail theft, theft, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, violation of a protective order, interfering with an arrest, disorderly conduct and misdemeanor drug possession. Three misdemeanor cases filed against him in three separate justice courts since 2014 remain unresolved.
