SALT LAKE CITY — A Kearns woman was sentenced to prison Monday for running over and killing a man who police say was trying to recover a stolen trailer.

Jeanette Teddie Miner, 27, was ordered to serve two concurrent prison terms of one to 15 years. She pleaded guilty in May to manslaughter and obstructing justice, both second degree felonies, for the death of Eric Carter, 49, in December.

Miner was originally charged along with two others with murder, robbery and burglary, all first-degree felonies, as well as obstructing justice, a second-degree felony. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Wednesday for the two men, Jay Richard Urry, 42, of Taylorsville, and Jesse Floyd Searle, 34, of West Valley City.

Urry and Searle had borrowed Miner's truck earlier in the day and stole the trailer and several other items from Carter's residence, according to charging documents. They returned later with Miner to allegedly steal more items.

Carter arrived at his house before the trio left and attempted to get back the trailer, which he had borrowed from a friend.

According to police, Miner was driving her pickup pulling the trailer and was attempting to escape when Carter climbed into the truck bed. That's when charging documents say Searle pushed Carter out of the truck.

"(Miner) then accelerated to leave the area, accidentally striking Mr. Carter with the trailer, resulting in his death," Miner's plea agreement states.

Before he died, Carter called 911 and gave emergency dispatchers the license plate number of the truck, which was registered to Miner, police said.

Miner admitted in the plea agreement that, after running over Carter, she and at least one of the men abandoned the trailer. She then abandoned the truck in a different spot, calling police to report it as stolen.
