Police identify father, son involved in fatal target practice incident

SNOWVILLE, Box Elder County — An adult male accidentally shot and killed by his father Saturday while the two were target shooting in Box Elder County was identified Sunday.

James Shurtz, 27, was reportedly in position downrange acting as a spotter while his father, Glenn Shurtz, was shooting a .30-caliber rifle at targets when the incident happened, according to Chief Deputy Dale Ward of the Box Elder County Sheriff's department.

In a location approximately 20 miles west of Snowville just off of State Road 30, authorities said the father and son were shooting at multiple targets that were set up west of the shooter and the two alternated positions as shooter and spotter.

James somehow came into his father's line of fire when he was was struck by a single-round in the chest. He died at the scene.

Statements and information at the scene are still be investigated by the Box Elder County deputies.
