OGDEN — An Ogden police officer shot and killed a man Friday as he was apparently stabbing a woman.
Officers responding to a domestic violence call arrived about 3:30 p.m. to find a man stabbing a woman multiple times in front of a home at 437 N. 630 East, prompting police to shoot him, said Ogden Police Lt. Danielle Croyle said.
"Officers made some commands, the suspect didn't comply," she said.
The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition after being treated at the scene. She underwent surgery Friday evening. The woman and her attacker lived together at the home, Croyle said, but she wasn't sure whether they were married.
The man died at the scene. No officers were injured. The officer who shot the man was placed on administrative leave, per policy.
"The officer just took the necessary actions to defuse the situation," Croyle said.
The woman's daughter and her daughter's friend witnessed the stabbing and were taken to a hospital, where they were "being taken care of," the lieutenant said. Police also planned to question them about the incident. Croyle believes the girl and her friend are teenagers.
Robbie Lamb, who lives about a block from where the stabbing and shooting occurred, said he was walking nearby when he "heard bang, bang, bang, bang. They are doing construction out here so of course I just thought it was nail guns.
"(I) didn't think nothing of it, continued walking on and the next thing I know there's cops coming from every direction," he said.
Lamb watched the woman being put into an ambulance and said she was "coherent" and waving to someone.
It was a bystander who called 911 to report the stabbing, according to Croyle.
A neighbor, who wished to be identified only as Kim, said she saw more than a dozen police cars arrive at the home.
"(Officers) said that there's no more bad guys on this street," she said.
Lamb and other neighbors said they are surprised to see something so serious happen at the home, which they say hasn't attracted police attention in the past.
The Utah State Medical Examiner's Office was called to the scene. The Weber County Homicide Task Force also arrived and began an independent investigation into what happened, "so we don't have a conflict of interest," Croyle said.
The name of the man who was killed was not released Friday.
