RUPERT, Idaho — A Shetland pony was euthanized after being abused in Idaho, investigators said Monday.

The pony named Patches was found Sunday morning in Rupert, Idaho, after it was "drug down a paved road," according to the Minidoka County Sheriff's Office. Investigators said the pony was still alive when it was discovered, but had to be euthanized due to its injuries.

A neighbor told TV station KIDK 3 that the pony was "absolutely mutilated" and "badly beaten," with someone cutting out part of the pony's groin after dragging it for more than a mile. The pony was beloved by neighbors and typically stood out on a lawn, according to a post on Facebook.

Investigators are working to identify those responsible for abusing the pony. Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Minidoka County Sheriff's Office by calling 208-434-2320 or Crime Stoppers at 208-436-5353. County officials said there is a cash reward available for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of those connected to the animal-cruelty case.
