SALT LAKE CITY — Travelers, be advised. Getting ground transportation at Salt Lake International Airport could be more difficult in a few weeks.
That’s because the airport is shutting down an area formerly allotted to taxi drivers waiting to pick up customers, according to notice sent to rideshare businesses by the Airport Ground Transportation Administration. Beginning Monday, June 15, cabbies will have to fight for a spot in the line — only 25 will be allowed at the airport at any given time.
“It’ll be a bit chaotic,” said one cab driver who wanted to remain anonymous.
Ground transportation officials encouraged drivers to “actively seek and provide” services in downtown Salt Lake City, particularly near hotels and other high-traffic areas, in an effort to avoid any sort of chaos in the airport queue.
“It is not in the best interest of passengers, the Airport/City, or ground transportation providers for ground transportation providers to stage for excessively long periods of time at or near the airport,” ground transportation manager Larry Bowers wrote.
The closures are a result of ongoing construction at the airport.
