UPDATE: One Sweet Slice won Food Network's "Cupcake Wars" Sunday after three rounds of Star Wars-themed competition. The cupcakes were all inspired by the movies, and the final round showcased a display inspired by the TIE Fighter.
SOUTH JORDAN — A local bakery will appear Sunday on Food Network's 'Cupcake Wars.'
The owners of One Sweet Slice have been making cupcakes for seven years, although they only opened shop in South Jordan in June 2011.
Janell Brown said she entered the competition because of her customers.
"A lot of customers kept asking me if we had been on the show, or if we were going to audition," Brown said. "People just kept asking, so we decided to give it a shot."
They were asked to shoot an audition video and were ultimately asked to compete in February.
"We were jumping up and down, laughing and screaming," Brown said.
Brown said the Star Wars-themed experience was stressful, but fun.
"We had a really good time," she said. "It was fun to see how things work behind the scenes, and to see people in person that you normally only see on TV."
The competition was an "all out battle," according to Brown, although everyone treated her and her assistant, Kristen Cold, well. And Brown believes what she learned on the show can be used back in her shop.
"Being on the show showed me you haven't ever done it all," she said. "There's always another flavor combination, or display you can do with your shop. It helped me think outside the box and realize there is something else that can be done."
Utah bakeries have a history of success with the show. American Fork's The Sweet Tooth Fairy took first place in ‘Cupcake Wars' in April.
