LAKE MEARS, Michigan — A Michigan couple said they have gone "full circle" after getting remarried and finding a lost promise ring that had been missing for almost 45 years.

Axle Thomson gave the ring to Sandy in 1968 when he was 20 and she was 16 years old. A few months later, Sandy felt the ring slip off while water skiing at Lake Mears. She didn't bother looking for the ring in the deep lake and thought she would never see it again.

"I came off the skis and felt it slip off," Sandy told inmycommunity.com. "I felt terrible. I had only had it for a couple of months."

The couple got married in 1970 and had a son and a daughter. They remained together for 37 years but eventually drifted apart and were divorced in 2007.

However, their son fell into a diabetic coma in 2010 and the tragedy reunited the couple. Axle proposed to Sandy for a second time in 2011 and they were remarried July 2012.

It was like we had gone full circle. It was just meant to be.

In April 2013, Sandy, 65, and Axle, 69, drove past Lake Mears and noticed that it had dried up. They decided to try and look for the ring that had been lost for almost 45 years.

"I never forgot about that ring," Sandy said. "It meant so much to us both."

The couple spent most of the day searching for the ring with a metal detector and were about to give up, when the detector made a noise.

Sandy scraped over the area with a shovel and saw a glint of gold. They had found the ring about 275 feet from what had previously been the shoreline.

"I couldn't believe it," Sandy said. "It was just incredible. It was like we had gone full circle. It was just meant to be. We're stuck with each other now. We will be together forever."
