SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Court of Appeals has affirmed an order for a Utah businessman convicted of running a Ponzi scheme to pay more than $10 million in restitution.

The Deseret News reported Monday that the court rejected arguments last week by Dee Allen Randall's attorneys that he owed only $1.2 million for harming 12 people.

Randal was sentenced to nine to 30 years in prison for securities fraud and carrying out a pattern of unlawful activity.

Prosecutors say he conned about 700 people into investing more than $72 million from 2006 until 2011.

A judge set restitution based on his criminal behavior for two years.

The court opinion states that Randal apologized to "every single investor" and noted his restitution responsibility didn't stop at victims listed in charging documents.
