ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — An Annapolis financial adviser says she was fired because she was pregnant.
The American Civil Liberties Union said in a Wednesday letter that a firm affiliated with Northwestern Mutual violated state and federal anti-discrimination laws when Leslie Ann Bentley was fired in August.
The ACLU says Bentley's firing came about a month after she revealed her pregnancy to her supervisors at Michael Chartos and Associates.
Bentley filed a complaint in September, but it was dropped because the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights concluded the firm was exempt from anti-discrimination laws because it has fewer than 15 employees.
The ACLU says Bentley was an employee of the firm's parent company Northwestern Mutual.
A Northwestern Mutual spokeswoman says the company is reviewing the allegations. Chartos didn't respond to a request for comment.
