SALT LAKE CITY — The former police chief of Mantua who lost his job after a high-profile impaired driving incident now faces a new DUI charge.
Shane Jacob Zilles, 50, of Wellsville, was charged on Friday in Hyrum Justice Court with DUI, a class B misdemeanor, and driving on a suspended license, a class C misdemeanor.
The incident happened on Feb. 6 at 5:36 p.m. near Lincoln Elementary School, 90 S. Center Street, in Hyrum, according to court records. But no additional details about the incident have been released.
Zilles has been arrested three times since pleading guilty to impaired driving in 2019 when Utah Highway Patrol troopers stopped Zilles, who was still police chief, driving recklessly near the mouth of Sardine Canyon while in his police patrol car.
Troopers pulled Zilles over after he was seen driving in his patrol car at least 86 mph in a 65 mph zone. The vehicle was traveling in the median, and without any emergency lights or sirens, according to a UHP report. He was sentenced to two days in jail and placed on probation for one year.
Zilles was fired as chief of the small Utah town in Box Elder County shortly after his arrest.
In addition to his Feb. 6 arrest, Zilles was also arrested Feb. 14 for investigation of five counts of possessing prescription drugs that were forged or altered. Formal charges had not been filed in that case as of Friday.
On Aug. 12, he was stopped by Logan police for suspicion of driving under the influence and was later charged with DUI, a class B misdemeanor, in Logan Justice Court. A trial in that case is scheduled for March 20.
