WEST HAVEN — Deputies with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said a couple crashed their two cars through a West Haven backyard and left one behind before trying to claim that it was stolen from them.
Troy Chase said he and his wife didn’t know what to think when they heard a loud crashing noise come from behind their house Thursday night.
“Sounded pretty bad,” Chase said. “(Like a) trainwreck.”
Still, the couple thought the sound was coming from their neighbor’s backyard until they woke up and saw the wreckage in their yard the next morning.
“There was stuff everywhere,” Chase said. “We got it cleaned up kind of, but it was pretty bad.”
Chase said there was also a black Scion sedan left behind. Nealy Adams, a lieutenant with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, said 30-year-old Brian Bischoff and his girlfriend, 23-year-old Tieler Tanner reported that same Scion sedan stolen.
However, there was one piece of evidence that would refute their story: surveillance video from the Chases’ next-door neighbor.
“The video footage contradicted the statements that were provided to deputies,” Adams said.
In the video, the black Scion can be seen crashing through the Chases’ gate while an Audi that deputies said was being driven by Tanner, crashes through a shed.
Arresting documents said Tanner then got out of the Scion and into Tanner’s car, along with her 6-month-old and 1-year-old child who were sitting in the back seat, before taking off.
Adams said deputies, along with Adult Probation and Parole officials, later searched Bischoff’s home.
“They found out that there was narcotics in the home, drug paraphernalia in the home and there were also children in the home,” Nealy said.
According to a probable cause statement, officers also found a handgun on the baby’s changing table and a shotgun behind the changing table, both with serial numbers scratched off.
In the meantime, Chase was hoping to convince city leaders that a lighted stop sign needs to be put at the end of the street leading into his yard and driveway. He said this is the second time in five years that a car has crashed through their yard and shed.
“This is getting ridiculous for us to have to deal with all this,” Chase said.
