PROVO — A Provo man accused of abusing his girlfriend’s 1-year-old daughter has been charged.

Javier Alverdi-Ramirez, 20, was charged Monday in 4th District Court with child abuse, a second-degree felony.

On Thursday, a 1-year-old girl “suffered a head injury that resulted in loss of consciousness and vomiting,” according to charging documents.

When further examined by doctors, broken ribs and “fresh bruises all over her body” were also discovered, the charges state.

“The bruises were recent to several weeks old and appeared to be caused by a human hand. On most of the bruises you could see the finger marks from an adult hand,” police wrote in a Utah County Jail booking affidavit.

When interviewed by police, the girl’s mother said she had suspected that Alverdi-Ramirez had been abusing her daughter “for some time,” according to the charges.

Alverdi-Ramirez claimed the child fell from the bed, the affidavit states. But the doctor who contacted authorities “said the head injury was consistent with abuse and not from a fall.”
