PROVO — A man is in jail after police say he took an Uber from a hotel, and brought with him a duffel bag containing what appeared to be meth and heroin on Friday.

The man called an Uber to pick him up at the Little Suites on University Avenue, according to jail documents. After the pickup, an officer stopped the Uber, that was traveling north on I-15 near University Parkway, for changing lanes without a proper signal and closely following the car in front of it.

A responding officer said he noticed that a man was sitting in the back seat of the car who seemed nervous, according to jail documents. The man made "exaggerated furtive movements," would not make eye contact when asked questions, and said he was "fine" when the officer asked him why he was nervous, documents say.

The officer noticed a duffel bag in the back seat on the floorboard near the man, observed the man "appeared more nervous than normal," and called for a K-9 assist, according to documents. The dog indicated positively on the car's trunk and a search of the vehicle was conducted.

During the search the officer found a black duffel bag containing several packages wrapped in plastic, appearing to contain meth and heroin, according to jail documents. The substances were later field tested and preliminary results indicated the bags contained approximately 11 pounds of meth and more than two pounds of heroin.

The driver of the Uber spoke with police and told them he received a message to pick up a passenger from the Little Suites, responded, and when he arrived, the passenger placed a bag in the car, according to jail documents.

Police arrested Edgar Esteban Ramos Valdez and booked him into the Utah County Jail on investigation of possession of drugs with the intent to distribute.
