COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Police have arrested a man after a pursuit which involved the man allegedly ramming an officer’s vehicle, police say.

Jesus Gonzales, 28, was arrested after leading police on a chase that began around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, according to Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Thomas Daugherty. An officer attempted to pull Gonzales over for an equipment violation on his vehicle.

After Gonzales pulled over and made contact with the officer, Gonzales sped off going eastbound on Fort Union Blvd, Daugherty said.

The officer followed the vehicle for a short distance and then terminated the pursuit. Another officer saw the vehicle driving east on Bengal Blvd. Officers were able to deploy a spike strip and spiked the vehicle’s tires but Gonzales was able to keep driving.

Officers then attempted to box in the vehicle near 2300 east and 6600 south, but Gonzales rammed a police car to get out, Daugherty said. The officer in the vehicle that was hit was not injured.

Gonzales then crashed into a parked vehicle a short time later. Gonzales left his vehicle and fled on foot but was taken into custody shortly after, Daugherty said. He was checked for injuries and then booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of failing to stop at an officer’s command, fleeing, aggravated assault for ramming a police car, DUI and various drug-related infractions and other crimes.
