SALT LAKE CITY — A TRAX train collided with a West Jordan police vehicle near Rice-Eccles Stadium Thursday afternoon, Utah Transit Authority officials said.
UTA spokesman Remi Barron said the incident happened just north of the stadium at around 3:40 p.m., while traffic to the University of Utah football season-opening game vs. Southern Utah began to increase.
University of Utah Police Sgt. Garth Smith said the officer was there to assist with the game, and was making a U-turn at the time and failed to see the train in time to avoid a collision.
Barron said the officer suffered minor injuries and was sent to a local hospital to be evaluated.
UTA stopped trains at the stadium for about an hour and a bus bridge was set up between the Stadium and South Campus stations while crews cleaned up the scene.
The area was cleared at about 4:30 p.m.
