Update: A company has offered to replace the ramps for Busey. The Kaysville Police Department and the Busey family are very thankful for all the generous offers from so many people. Meanwhile, the investigation into the theft continues.KAYSVILLE — Police are looking for thieves who apparently swiped wheelchair ramps from an elderly woman's front steps.
Sometime on March 10, most likely while Georgia Busey was away from home near 100 East and 100 North, someone stole her Silver Spring 10-foot, parallel aluminum ramps.
“I was pretty upset that somebody would take them,” Busey said Wednesday.
When she's at home, Busey gets around with a walker. But when she goes out with her power chair, she needs the ramps to ride down her front steps.
The ramps were bolted to a platform at the top of the porch, so the thief, or thieves, had to remove several screws to get them free.
Moving them would have caused quite a racket, Busey said.
"My dog would've barked," she said, "and I'm not a heavy sleeper; everything wakes me up."
That's why she's pretty sure the crime was committed during the day by somebody who had cased out her place.
"Whoever it was must've known Kevin and I were both gone, and that the front tenants were both at work,” she said.
The ramps were practically new; Busey had them installed in December at a price tag of about $1,400. Even though they were aluminum, they weighed more than 60 pounds and would've been heavy to carry away.
"I would've heard clanging," Busey said. "They couldn't have done it without making any noise."
Kaysville police detective Mason Flint, who is working on Busey’s case, said the department doesn’t have any leads but will work to help Busey resolve the problem.
