COALVILLE — A semitrailer fire closed all but one westbound lane of I-80 near Echo Dam in Summit County Wednesday morning.

A semitrailer and pup, loaded with 300 barrels (approximately 16,500 gallons) of Naphta fuel, was westbound on I-80 near milepost 170 shortly after 6 a.m. when the first trailer caught fire, according to UHP. Investigators believe the fire may have started in the trailer brakes.

The driver pulled over at milepost 169 and called 911. Crews extinguished the flames and no injuries were reported.

There was no traffic accident and no other vehicles were involved, according to the North Summit Fire Department.

Fuel from the tanker did not leak or ignite, but the side of the trailer burned severely, according to UHP.

The fire initially shut down the freeway entirely. Eastbound lanes opened just before 7 a.m. Traffic headed west was originally rerouted to the Echo Canyon Highway. All lanes on the freeway were reopened by 9:50 a.m.

Updates will be posted as they become available.
