TAYLORSVILLE — A 17-year-old boy is suspected of setting a fire in his bedroom at a state-run group home Saturday.
Fire crews responded to the fire on Hurstborne Circle about 10:30 a.m. and found smoke and flames spewing from a bedroom window in the front of the house, Unified Fire Capt. Clint Mecham said.
There were six people home at the time. They had all exited the home safely before fire crews arrived. The 17-year-old boy who was being called a suspect in the fire was treated on-scene for smoke inhalation and transported to an area hospital as a precaution, Mecham said. The boy remained in the hospital under observation Saturday evening.
Fire crews searched the house and extinguished the fire in about 10 minutes, Mecham said. No one else was injured in the fire.
Investigators confirmed the fire began in the boy's bedroom, and reached the house's attic, damaging the roof. The house was uninhabitable Saturday night, Mecham said. State officials were working to find temporary lodging for the residents Saturday.
Damage to the home was estimated at between $130,000 and $140,000.
