WELLESELY, Mass. — A man who found $20,000 in a dumpster is still searching for the owners of the money.
Carlos, a Brazilian immigrant who is only identified by his first name, told UPI he visits the Wellesely dump about twice a week to search for magazines to turn into art. During an October visit, he found a hollowed-out book that contained $20,000.
"I quickly closed the book and I ran to the car," he told CBS Boston. "When I opened the book the money fell all over the place, one hundred dollar bills here, one hundred dollar bills there."
Instead of keeping the money, Carlos set a six-month deadline for the owner to come forward. He advertised an email address at which the owner could contact him, and then fielded nearly 200 responses from people who saw the advertisement in the local paper.
Some merely congratulated him on the find, but many tried to claim the money, according to Yahoo News.
So far, none of those who have come forward have had legitimate claims, Carlos said. No one has been able to name the title of the book or the exact amount of the money he found.
If no one has claimed the money by May 8, Carlos will give some of the money to charity and help his daughter with her school tuition, he said.
