SOUTH JORDAN — Randy Treglown was the kind of teacher students remember years after they leave the classroom.

The popular middle school teacher and basketball coach was laid to rest Saturday after family, friends and former students said their goodbyes. Treglown was killed while jogging to school in the morning darkness this past week.

Brady Haider is one of several former basketball players who learned the game from Treglown in attendance at the funeral. He wore a round, orange sticker resembling a basketball reading "Treglown Forever" on his blue shirt.

Treglown did not just teach basketball, his students say. Treglown taught about life. Maybe that's why hundreds of people came to his funeral, looked at his pictures, hugged each other for comfort, and remembered everything he taught them.

It seemed like the line never stopped. The family expected 1,100 people to attend the viewing and funeral.

"We were totally amazed at the people who showed up here," said the coach's father, Cilff Treglown.

Treglown's father, Cliff, says the family knew he was a good teacher, they just had no idea how much he was loved. He said he might be prouder of his son now than ever before.

"We knew we had a good son, but it's been reinforced over and over and over so many times," Cliff Treglown said.

His father says what Randy Treglown taught his students about basketball and life is what keeps his son's memory alive.

"The thing that affects them for good and helped to change lives is what he's been doing all of his life," Cliff Treglown said.

Through several fundraisers, the community raised enough money to cover the expense of the funeral and burial, according to the family.

Police are still investigating to determine if charges will be filed against the driver who struck Treglown. An officer said at the time of the accident, the driver got out of the car right way and tried to help. He said the man didn't see Treglown until after the accident.
