Utah wildfires burn hundreds of thousands of acres

SALT LAKE CITY — Wildfires continue to burn across the state, equaling nearly 200,000 acres.

Northern Utah

b>Quail Fire

The Quail Fire acreage was reduced from 5,000 to 2,000 Wednesday, with 5 percent containment.

Of the initial 500 homes evacuated, 325 homes in the Alpine cove and Box Elder Cove subdivisions and all homes north of Country Manor Lane remain evacuated. One barn burned, and two homes received minor damages.

American Fork Canyon and the Alpine loop will be closed for one more day but officials are allowing people who left personal belongings in American Fork Canyon or the Alpine Loop to retrieve them with a police escort. Those wishing to retrieve belongings can find a police escort at the entrance of American Fork Canyon.

The fire began around 2 p.m. Tuesday and was human caused.

Millville Canyon Fire

Firefighters reached 100 percent containment on the fire, which had consumed 109 acres by Wednesday.

The fire was caused by target shooting.

Eastern Utah

Uinta Fire

A small fire 18 miles northwest of Neola, Duchesne County has burned 5 acres, and was 0 percent contained as of Wednesday. It started around 9 a.m. on July 4, and the cause is still under investigation.

The Uinta Canyon Trailhead and Uinta Canyon Trail have been closed to ensure access for firefighters.

Church Camp Fire

In the week and a half since the fire started, the fire in the Argyle and Indian canyons has burned 6,800 acres in Duchesne County. On Wednesday, officials reported the fire was 85 percent contained, and the fire had burned an estimated 15 cabins and other residences, and an additional 78 structures had been destroyed.

All residences and cabins on Argyle Canyon Road have been evacuated. U.S. Highway 191 over Indian Canyon remained open, but visibility is low due to heavy smoke and fire personnel frequently crossing.

Wolf Den Fire

The 22,000 acre fire near Big Park reached 55 percent containment Wednesday.

Central Utah

Clay Springs Fire

The fire in Oak City, Millard County continued to burn Wednesday, growing from 102,699 Tuesday to 104,681 acres Wednesday. Firefighters reported 51 percent containment of the blaze.

Seely Fire

The fire grew to 40,385 acres Wednesday, and remained at 15 percent containment

Evacuations remain lifted.

Southern Utah

Shingle Fire

Firefighters gained 10 percent containment on the fire in Kane County, and 8,200 acres had burned as of Wednesday.

Evacuations are in effect for Swains Creek and Stout Canyons subdivisions in the Dixie National Forest, as well as the subdivisions of Harris Flat and Elk Ridge. Campers in Uinta Flat encouraged to relocate and told to expect evacuation.

State Route 14 closed from Mammoth Junction to U.S. 89 as well as numerous Forest Service road closures in the fire area.

A spark from an ATV started the fire.
