SALT LAKE CITY — Firefighters in Utah are now battling 10 active wildfires that have blackened over 150,000 across the state.
Southern Utah
Fire investigators announced Tuesday they now know what caused the Shingle Fire, which is burning out of control in Kane County. Investigators believe an ATV sparked the blaze Sunday in an area south of Duck Creek Village.
The flames have blackened more than 8,200 acres since then, and mandatory evacuations are in effect for the Swains Creek, Stout Canyon, Ponderosa, Elk Ridge and Harris Flat subdivisions southeast of Cedar City. State Route 14 also remains closed in the area.
Kane County will get federal aid to help pay for the cost of fighting the fire.
Northern Utah
The Quail Fire is the state's newest wildfire. It was sparked Tuesday afternoon in the foothills above Alpine, near American Fork Canyon.
The fire forced the evacuation of 500 homes and has burned 600 acres so far. Firefighters had not reached any level of containment on it as of 9 p.m. Tuesday.
The Millville Canyon Fire near Logan had burned 109 acres at last report. Fire officials said Monday night they had 50 percent containment on the blaze.
The Rose Crest Fire, which was started Friday when a hot car was parked near dry grass, is reported as 100 percent contained. It burned a total of 611 acres.
Central Utah fires
The largest of the fires, the Clay Springs Fire, continued to grow Tuesday. Fire officials now say it has scorched 102,699 acres near Delta.
One home was lost in the fire, but it is now about 50 percent contained.
All evacuation orders in the area were lifted Monday.
The Seeley Fire near Huntington has burned nearly 33,500 acres. A bolt of lightning sparked the fire on June 26, and by Tuesday evening it was reported at only 15 percent containment.
Evacuations for the area include Electric Lake, Scofield, Clear Creek, Hiawatha, Cleveland, Miller Flat, Hog Flat, and several youth camps.
The fire has also forced the closure of state Route 31 from Cleveland Reservoir to Crandall Canyon; U.S. 96 from state Route 6 to state Route 284 and Miller's Flat Road from Scad Valley to state Route 31 are also closed.
The Wood Hollow Fire, which destroyed dozens of homes and killed one person in Sanpete County last week, is fully contained. In all, it burned neary 48,000 acres.
Eastern Utah fires
Fire officials said Tuesday the Wolf Den Fire, burning 35 miles south of Vernal, has now consumed roughly 22,000 acres. It is now 40 percent contained.
The Pole Creek Fire near Neola was reported as 97 percent contained Tuesday. The fire started June 27 and has burned 2,028 acres. Its cause is still under investigation, but fireworks were found in the area.
The Church Camp Fire near Duchesne was reported as 70 percent contained Tuesday. It has consumed 6,100 acres, as well as a cabin and several outbuildings.
According to a press release, the mandatory evacuation for Argyle Canyon and the road closure for Argyle Canyon Road remain in effect. Highway 191 remains open.
