SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City ranks in the top 10 for best cities to live in if you don't have a car.
The website 24-7 Wall St. acknowledges people without vehicles like to live fairly close to a grocery store, schools, shopping and entertainment. It ranked the top 10 cities in the country for being car-less.
- San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, Calif.
- Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton, Ore.-Wash.
- New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, N.Y.-N.J.-Pa.
- Honolulu, Hawaii
- Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Wash.
- San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.
- Denver-Aurora, Colo.
- Salt Lake City, Utah
- Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, Calif.
- Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Mass. to N.H.
San Francisco and New York top the list, and Salt Lake City comes in eighth.
The site points to the TRAX light rail system expansion as one of the main reasons for the high ranking. It also notes that the public can get to the ski slopes by using public transit.
Seven of the cities on 24/7 Wall St.'s list are also featured on Bicycling magazine's list of the top 50 bike-friendly cities.
Criteria
To compile the list, 24/7 Wall St. studied the top 100 largest metropolitan areas and considered the following:
- Percentage of neighborhoods covered by public transit and frequency of service
- Jobs reachable within 90 minutes or less by public transit for people
- "Walk score" for the primary city of each metropolitan area
- Percentage of commuters who bike to work
