NEW YORK (AP) — The critically panned Broadway musical "Doctor Zhivago" is closing.

Producers said Monday night the epic tale of five intertwined lovers set during the final days of Czarist Russia and the 1917 Revolution will close on May 10. The musical was directed by Des McAnuff and opened April 21.

The show is based on the novel by Boris Pasternak and stars Tam Mutu and Kelli Barrett with a score by Lucy Simon. It will have played 26 previews and 23 regular performances.

The 1965 film version starred Julie Christie and Omar Sharif.

After a roasting from theater critics the show has limped along. Last week it earned $515,000 from a potential of $1.2 million, or 43 percent. Average paid admission was $64, one of Broadway's lowest.
