STREAM TOWN — March is upon us and spring is right around the corner. While it may be snowing outside it’s a new month which means there are new titles available to stream and keep you busy until the weather finally turns.
There is a lot out there to watch, but how do you find the good stuff? That’s why I’m here. Here are seven new titles streaming in March worth hunkering down and watching as we wait out the snow.
Netflix
“Music and Lyrics” (Available now)
I wouldn’t say I dislike rom-coms, but I will say I have a high bar for them if I’m going to take the time to watch them. One romantic comedy that met that bar for me was “Music and Lyrics.”
The film stars Hugh Grant as an aging rocker and Drew Barrymore as his songwriting muse. The film is funny, heartfelt and boasts great chemistry between the two leads. The music is a lot of fun as well.
“Christopher Robin” (Available now)
It didn’t make billions of dollars like most everything else Disney pushes out, but “Christopher Robin” was a wonderful movie that I can’t wait to watch again with my kids.
The film follows an adult Christopher Robin as he faces the stressful reality of adulthood and remembers who he truly is with the help of his childhood friends.
The film is delightful and a great choice for a night in with the family.
“The Highwaymen” (Available March 29)
I can’t say this one is worth watching because it has not been released yet, but the Netflix original film “The Highwaymen” has my attention.
The film stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson as the two law enforcement officers who hunted the infamous criminals Bonnie and Clyde. The trailer promises a gritty and action-packed cat and mouse game with two great leads. Hopefully the actual film will deliver.
“The Highwaymen” is rated R for some strong violence and bloody images.
Hulu
“Blast From the Past” (Available now)
This one is a guilty pleasure for me, but “Blast From the Past” is headed to Hulu this month and I will be watching it.
The film itself is now a blast from the past as it’s 20 years old and its two stars are Alicia Silverstone and Brendan Fraser.
The film is about a family who locked themselves in a bomb shelter for decades when they thought a nuclear bomb had dropped. It’s now 1999 and the family's now grown son ventures out into what he thinks is a post-apocalyptic world, but it's only pre-Y2K Los Angeles.
The film is silly, but it’s also a lot of fun and includes some hilarious performances from Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek.
“I Can Only Imagine” (Available now)
There is something about powerful music and the story that inspires it. That’s what “I Can Only Imagine” is all about. The sweet film tells the true story behind MercyMe’s hit song “I Can Only Imagine.”
The actual story behind the song is heavy and at times heart wrenching, but also stands as a powerful reminder of the power behind forgiveness.
“I Can Only Imagine” is a great choice for a family with kids a little bit older. The film is rated PG, but the material is a bit more grown up.
“Free Solo” (Available now)
If you haven’t seen “Free Solo,” you’re in luck because it’s now on Hulu. If you haven’t heard of the movie, make sure your heart is in good shape before you turn it on.
“Free Solo” just won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and follows free solo climber Alex Honnold’s ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.
Free soloing is rock climbing alone and without ropes and this documentary shows it all off. The movie is surprisingly moving and insanely nerve racking. It’s a shame if you missed this one on the big screen, but it will still be great in your own home.
Just know there is about a one-minute segment where you will not breathe. So be prepared for that.
Amazon Prime Video
“Black Sheep” (Available now)
While “Tommy Boy” is the movie everyone thinks of when they think of Chris Farley and David Spade (and rightfully so), there is another movie that wasn’t quite as good but still pretty funny.
That movie is “Black Sheep” and it’s now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The film is absurd, over the top and downright idiotic at times, but that’s what makes it so great. Farley and Spade were pure gold together and I’m looking forward to visiting my old friends.
