ACROSS THE POND — After surviving his homecoming dance in the last “Spider-Man” film, Peter Parker will conquer another teen rite of passage — the Eurotrip — in the next installment of the superhero franchise.
Tom Holland’s Parker is headed to London in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” the sequel to 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
The first trailer for “Far From Home,” which opens July 5, debuted Tuesday morning, and you can watch it by clicking this link. (Note: At the very end of the trailer, one character says a crude remark that may be offensive to some viewers.)
Judging by the trailer, the film appears to ignore the events of last year’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” for better or worse. People who saw that film know what happened to Peter Parker, but it looks like “Far From Home” will be a completely separate story.
“Far From Home,” however, will come out after “Avengers: Endgame,” which debuts in April. Maybe something else will happen to Spider-Man that propels him toward the events of “Far From Home.”
Parker joins his buddies Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya) for a leisurely summer vacation trip to London. No troubles there, right? Just a nice relaxing trip with friends.
Wrong. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) shows up, and it looks like he’s got a job for Spider-Man.
Also appearing is Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio — a Spidey supervillain known for expert illusionist skills and signature fishbowl helmet. Appropriately, Mysterio’s motivations are clouded in the trailer — it’s not clear if he’s trying to help Parker or if he’s deceiving him.
The villain in “Homecoming” — Vulture (Michael Keaton) — was a fan favorite. Hopefully, Gyllenhaal will continue the streak of memorable bad guys.
