Bayer Leverkusen silenced the Stadio Olimpico with a 2-0 win at Roma in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals to extend its record unbeaten streak to 47 matches across all competitions. Roma was dangerous with an early header off the crossbar from Romelu Lukaku. But then Leverkusen struck on the counterattack seven minutes later with a goal from Florian Wirtz. Midfielder Robert Andrich added another goal for Leverkusen in the 73rd with a long-range shot. Atalanta drew 1-1 at Marseille in the other semifinal.

The brilliance of Anthony Edwards will likely be the reason if the Minnesota Timberwolves knock down the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets in their second-round playoff matchup. Edwards missed the tying 3-point try at the buzzer in Game 5 at Denver in the first round that preserved a series-clinching victory for the Nuggets last year. The Timberwolves posted a sweep-completing win at Phoenix last week behind a 31-point second half by the 22-year-old Edwards. That was his latest masterpiece not simply as a scorer, but as a passer, a defender and a leader. Game 1 is Saturday.

Minnesota sports betting bill runs afoul of partisan rancor over state senator's burglary arrest

A bill to legalize sports betting in Minnesota is in serious trouble, running afoul of the partisan rancor over the arrest of a state senator on a felony burglary charge. One of the lead authors, Democratic Sen. Matt Klein isn't ready to call sports betting dead. But he says he's less optimistic now. That's because Democratic Sen. Nicole Mitchell was charged last week with breaking into her estranged stepmother's home. Since then, Senate Republicans have forced hours of debate on unsuccessful attempts to remove Mitchell, slowing down the pace of legislation with less than three weeks left in the session.

When Byron Murphy II was presented with the idea of moving from the higher-profile position of linebacker to playing on the defensive line as a high schooler, he was at first a little reluctant but eventually accepted the move and what it could do for his career. Clearly making the position switch ended up being the right move for Murphy after the Texas star was the second defensive player selected in last week's NFL draft. With a run of offensive talent dominating the early parts of the draft, Murphy slid into the hands of the Seattle Seahawks with the No. 16 overall pick. It's a big addition for new coach Mike Macdonald and improvements he hopes to make to Seattle's defense.

Major League Baseball extended the MLB Draft League through the 2030 season and announced plans to expand by two teams to eight. The Draft League launched in 2021 following the reorganization that trimmed the minor leagues and it started play with six teams that had been in the Eastern, Carolina and New York-Penn Leagues. This year's season starts June 4 with State College at Trenton, Frederick at West Virginia and Mahoning Valley at Williamsport. Each team is scheduled for 80 games. MLB says 133 players from the Draft League had been picked in the amateur draft and 103 had signed as free agents.

In between those losses came confirmation that England will have just four places in next season's expanded Champions League, and not five. Spurs are fifth and stayed seven points behind fourth-place Aston Villa with one game in hand.

Mike Yastrzemski had a visit from his grandfather Carl and then homered into the Red Sox bullpen like the Hall of Fame outfielder so often did in his heyday, and the San Francisco Giants beat Boston 3-1. Ryan Walker pitched a perfect sixth inning to help the Giants avoid the sweep and snap Boston's four-game winning streak. Camilo Doval pitched the ninth for his sixth save. Tyler O'Neill walked twice and hit a wall-scraping popup to drive in Boston's only run. Carl Yastrzemski visited his grandson in the visitor's clubhouse before the game, but did not stay to see Mike's homer.

The iconic landmark will be lit in the foundation colors of blue, red, pink and yellow. The WSF will hold its annual awards dinner Oct. 16 in New York and celebrate "50 Years of Changing the Game."
