A few more days like his first 18 holes at Valhalla Golf Club, and Tony Finau just might be able to shed his label as one of the PGA Tour's winningest golfers without a major victory.

Xander Schauffele has set the PGA Championship record with a 62. He also ties a major championship record that he shared last year in the U.S. Open. Schauffele took advantage of rain-softened conditions at Valhalla. And he's been playing some good golf. Schauffele was runner-up last week in the Wells Fargo Championship. Schauffele played the back nine in 31. He ran off three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the front nine to get in range of the record. The previous mark at the PGA was a 63. One of those was Jose Maria Olazabal at Valhalla 10 years ago.

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler shot a solid 4-under 67 in the opening round of the PGA Championship. Scheffler started the tournament with a bang, holing out for eagle on the first hole. Things slowed down after that, with Scheffler balancing four birdies against two bogeys to finish five shots behind early leader Xander Schauffele. Scheffler called the round "solid" but lamented missing a couple of short putts. The world's top-ranked player arrived at Valhalla having won four of his last five starts.

For Rory McIlroy, there was no better place than the golf course. The 35-year-old, who surprised the golf world when he filed divorce papers earlier this week, shot 5-under 66 to open the PGA Championship. He left Valhalla after his first round four shots behind Xander Schauffele, who shot a tournament-record 62. McIlroy again refused comment about his personal life but said he always loves being inside the ropes at a golf tournament. He made six birdies in the opening round, though his best hole might have been the par he saved on the 18th hole after driving his tee shot in the water.

Justin Thomas thinks he played better than he scored. But given all the emotion and pressure from playing in his hometown, he could live with a 69. Thomas had four birdies over his last six holes. It looked worse just because he was playing alongside Xander Schauffele and his PGA-record 62. Thomas went to Saint Xavier and was a longtime head professional at Harmony Landing. It's rare for a major to be held in a player's hometown when that city doesn't get a lot of professional golf.

So Mi Lee of South Korea shot a 6-under 66 after getting into the field less than two hours before her tee time and took a two-shot lead after the opening round of the Mizuho Americas Open. The event got off to a surprising start with the withdrawal of defending champion Rose Zhang because of illness after three holes. Besides Zhang, who was coming off a win in the Cognizant Founders Cup last weekend, Maja Stark of Sweden and Caroline Masson of Germany also withdrew, getting Lee and Mao Saigo of Japan into the field.

Tracy Phillips hit what he thought was a pretty good drive on the par-4 17th hole at Valhalla. It traveled 240 yards and didn't make it to the start of the fairway. Such is life when you are 61 and playing in the PGA Championship. The club pro from Oklahoma said this unexpected trip to the majors brings back memories of 50 years ago, when he was a young kid hitting 3-woods into every green. In the opening round, he shot 4-over-par 75 on the 7,500-yard layout. He'll need a second round in the 60s to make the cut, but by now, Phillips says, he knows not to rule out anything.

A club professional is playing like he fits right in with tour pros at the PGA Championship. No, it's not Michael Block again. This time it was Jeremy Wells who shot 69. It's only the second time in the past 20 years a club pro broke 70 in the first round of the PGA. Wells is from Cypress Lake in Fort Myers, Florida. Brooks Koepka had a 67 and is happy with his start. He has learned patience in his decade playing the majors. Xander Schauffele is off to a good start. History shows it doesn't lead to a win.

Tiger Woods fired a 1-over par 72 during the opening round of the PGA Championship. The 15-time major champion faltered late. He was 1-under heading into his final two holes before a pair of three-putts led to bogeys that pushed him into plus territory. Woods arrived at Valhalla having not played since his last-place finish at the Masters last month. The 48-year-old Woods says it took him a few holes to get the competitive juices flowing. When he arrives at the course for the second round he will try to avoid missing the cut for the fourth time in his last seven visits to the PGA.

Defending champion Rose Zhang withdrew from the Mizuho Americas Open because of illness after completing only three holes of the opening round. Zhang started on the back nine at Liberty National. She shot par on No. 10, double bogey on 11 and par on 12. Zhang's agent says she had an upset stomach. Kevin Hopkins says "I didn't think she was going to make it out on the course." The 20-year-old Zhang ended Nelly Korda's record-tying run of winning five straight LPGA tournament starts by finishing first last week at the Cognizant Founders Cup. It was her first victory in almost a year.

Right when it felt like there was no stopping Scottie Scheffler on any of golf's biggest stages, along came a few viable candidates, just in time for the PGA Championship. Rory McIlroy has won his last two starts, hitting top form as he returns to Valhalla Golf Club, the site of his 2014 PGA title, which also happens to be the last major he won. Defending champion Brooks Koepka bounced back from a 45th-place finish at the Masters, which Scheffler won in a runway, for a victory on the LIV Tour. Scheffler, McIlroy and Koepka are the three top favorites for the year's second major, where conditions will be soft and wet. Rain is expected at Valhalla on Friday and Saturday.

Rory McIlroy has all the momentum he could want heading into the PGA Championship as he tries to end a drought in the majors that has lasted a decade. He also has a major distraction. McIlroy is hopeful of ending a decade without a major in his return to Valhalla. But the distraction is a divorce from his wife of seven years. That petition was filed in Florida on Monday, right after he won at Quail Hollow and before flying up to Louisville for a major. McIlroy has a history of being able to separate personal life from work.

Ludvig Aberg brought a sparkling college resume to the PGA Tour and his play suggests his first major victory is very close. The 24-year-old from Sweden is just over a month removed from his major championship debut, a runner-up to Scottie Scheffler in the Masters. He will open golf's second major of the year, the PGA Championship at Valhalla, ranked sixth worldwide. Aberg seeks to add a second PGA Tour win to the RSM Classic title he won last fall with a tour record-tying 72-hole low score of 253.

For one evening, at least, the center of the golf universe was the world's most famous horse track. Defending PGA champion Brooks Koepka hosted the traditional champions dinner at Churchill Downs, a quick drive from Valhalla, where he'll try to defend his title. Most of the sport's still-active champions passed under the twin spires for the celebration. One notable exception was two-time champion Rory McIlroy. Koepka called it a good time and said his chef helped the staff at the racetrack do the cooking. The menu went heavy on the smoked meats: smoked brisket, smoked beef short ribs, smoked fried chicken, smoked cedar plank salmon.

Talor Gooch says he sees his invitation to the PGA Championship as proof that sanity may prevail amid the split between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. Gooch is the first LIV player to receive an exemption into the PGA based solely on his results in LIV, where he was the 2023 individual champion. Gooch says he thinks golf's four majors can serve as a "beacon" for LIV and the PGA Tour as the two sides try to find a way to reconcile. Gooch has been busy outside of golf. He recently became the owner of the Oklahoma Wildcatters, an expansion team in the Professional Bull Riders league.
