SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah legislator's measure that would see a hefty tax on vaping products was somewhat usurped this week in the state legislature by a committee that recommended a smaller tax instead.

A measure to re-establish U.S. Highway 6 as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway also advanced on the hill.

Utah House votes to ban A.G., other state offices from fundraising during legislative session =============================================================================================

The Utah House passed a bill Thursday banning campaign contributions to the attorney general, lieutenant governor, state auditor and state treasurer while the Legislature is in session.

HB320, sponsored by Rep. Mark Wheatley, D-Murray, would not affect the fundraiser Attorney General Sean Reyes has planned at Deer Valley Resort on March 1-3.

29 percent tax increase on vaping products moves forward at Utah Legislature ============================================================================

A Utah lawmaker's bid to slap an 86.5 percent tax increase on vaping products was muted Wednesday by a House committee, which recommended a 29 percent tax hike instead.

"We have an epidemic among our youth, and its called electronic cigarettes," said the sponsor of HB88, Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clearfield, making his case for an 86.5 percent tax on vaping products.

Campus civil liberties resolution headed to final passage =========================================================

The Utah House on Thursday gave its final approval to a resolution that affirms the civil liberties of students at Utah's public colleges and universities.

The House voted 55-14 to approve SCR3, sponsored by seemingly unlikely political allies Sen. Jim Dabakis, D-Salt Lake City, and Rep. Kim Coleman, R-West Jordan.

Bill advances to restore U.S. 6 as Grand Army of the Republic Highway =====================================================================

A Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War wore a historic military uniform Friday to see the House Transportation Committee unanimously advance a bill restoring U.S. 6 as the Grand Army of the Republic Highway.

Eric Dan Richhart, secretary-treasurer of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Department of Colorado and Wyoming, told the committee he had been working to restore the Grand Army of the Republic designation for nearly a decade.

He said he backs HB396 as someone "wholly supportive of all things veterans and military."
