SANDY — A man jumped out his bedroom window to escape a house fire early Sunday morning, fire officials said.

Sandy Fire Battalion Chief Eric Larson said the fire was reported at 3:11 a.m. Investigators believe it likely started in the garage of the home, near 9000 South and 400 West.

The house didn't have working smoke detectors, Larson said, and by the time the man inside realized there was a fire, he had few options.

"He attempted to go out the front door and there was too much fire and smoke, and he bailed out through a bedroom window," Larson said.

The man was not injured.

The house sustained major damage in the fire, and the garage burned to the ground.

Larson said incidents like this one highlight the importance of having working smoke detectors.

"(The resident is) extremely lucky to get out with his life, without a working smoke detector," he said.

The cause of the fire, which appears to have started in the garage, remains under investigation, Larson said. The home was expected to be a total loss and would likely need to be demolished following the fire.
