SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Isaiah Pineiro scored a game-high 20 points with seven rebounds to help the Toreros hand BYU its sixth loss in West Coast Conference play, 75-62 Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
TJ Haws led BYU (21-8, 10-6 WCC) with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, and Elijah Bryant had 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Cougars.
The Cougars committed just five turnovers to the Toreros’ 15 but shot a mere 37 percent from the field against a gritty San Diego defense that averaged just 50 points-against entering the game.
"We got ourselves in foul trouble too early, which made it difficult to get any kind of rhythm," BYU coach Dave Rose said. "I thought there were some things that we can build on."
Cameron Neubauer had 14 points with three assists for San Diego (17-11, 8-8 WCC), and Olin Carter III added 13 for the Toreros.
BYU starters Yoeli Childs, Luke Worthington and Jahshire Hardnett were limited in the first half due to foul trouble, and the Toreros took advantage with a 39-28 lead at the break.
The trio combined for just six points and two rebounds before halftime, and Childs picked up his third foul with just three shot attempts. Even San Diego’s Juwan Gay was ejected for a flagrant-two technical foul, limiting the Toreros’ post presence after just 14 minutes.
Bryant had just nine points in the first 20 minutes of playing, making one of his first five 3-point attempts.

Aubrey Ward-El had a game-high 16 points with two assists to lead San Diego, and BYU shot just 33 percent from the field en route to a 66-60 home loss at the Marriott Center.The Cougars shot better in the second half but couldn’t make a dent. Former Utah guard Isaiah Wright had 11 points, three rebounds and three assists, including a setup pass to Tyler Williams’ 3-pointer that gave San Diego a 59-47 lead with 6:57 to play.
Childs drew his fifth foul with 3:58 remaining, exiting the contest with just eight points, four rebounds and two blocks. It was the first game in 26 tries that the former Bingham High star did not score in double figures.
The Toreros’ lead ballooned as high as 10 late in the second half. BYU never led after the break and only led for 30 seconds all day.
