MIDVALE — Hillcrest High School students were sent home after the school was evacuated due to a gas leak on Wednesday morning, authorities say.
The school, at 7350 S. 900 East in Midvale, was evacuated about 8:30 a.m. There were no injuries due to the gas leak, Unified Fire Authority said in a tweet.
Authorities sent students home as a safety precaution because there will possibly be a long period of evacuation, the agency said.
A 500-gallon propane tank at a construction site on the school's campus sprung a leak early Wednesday morning, Canyons School District spokesman Jeff Haney said. Students were immediately evacuated when school officials were notified of the leak.

The propane tank tipped over Tuesday evening and the stem broke, according to Unified Fire Authority. The propane vapor leaked onto the construction site and the school's football field. Low levels of gas were also detected in the school gym, UFA said.
Students were ushered out of the building to a safe location, and some were waiting in heated school buses outside the school, Haney said.
Students were taken to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building at 700 E. 7500 South, where they could be picked up by their parents, KSL TV reported.
Construction is happening on campus as the school building is being rebuilt, Haney added. The site where the leak occurred was just a few yards away from where classes were in session.
The building is being vented, UFA said.
