PROVO, Utah (AP) — A new study says Provo has one of the fastest growing poverty rates in the nation.
The study by the Brookings Institution says Provo's poor population has nearly doubled from about 30,000 in 2000 to about 55,000 in 2012. The 84 percent growth ranks seventh among metropolitan areas in the U.S.
The (Provo) Daily Herald's report on the study notes the city is home to Brigham Young University with a large number of college students not making much money.
The study cites U.S. Census figures that show Provo's poverty rate is roughly 20 percent higher than that of the rest of Utah, with more than 30 percent of its residents living below the poverty level.
